Reliable Drum Pump for Acid and Alkali Transfer

Are you looking for a reliable drum pump for acid? When it comes to transferring acids and alkalis, safety and control are non-negotiable. At Flux Pumps, we understand the challenges of handling corrosive and hazardous liquids. Therefore, we offer a range of drum pumps in a choice of materials, for transferring acids & alkalis from barrels and IBC containers. Our class-leading F 424 and F 430 pumps are built for durability and exceptional chemical resistance. Additionally, they deliver the highest performance in the toughest environments. Whether you need to transfer concentrated acids or harsh alkalis, a Flux pump will deliver the performance and reliability you can depend on.

Features of a Flux drum pump for acid and alkalis

For safe, reliable acid and alkali transfer, Flux poly drum pumps have several unique design features. Here’s why Flux is the choice of industry leading chemical producers and distributors:

Constructed from corrosion-resistant materials such as polypropylene, PVDF and hastelloy C, with a choice of o-ring materials and pump styles. Flux offers the largest range of chemical drum pumps on the market.

Our F 430 model is the only plastic drum pump in the world to include a steel reinforced inner tube. This over-moulded inner tube ensures class-leading driveshaft support and unmatched strength.

Variable speed motors provide accurate, safe liquid transfer - ideal for dispensing chemicals into different sized containers.

Constructed for extended service life, our drum pump for acid and alkalis ensures consistent performance in heavy duty applications. A huge range of spare parts means that Flux offers the lowest whole life cost of any drum pump.

Lightweight and intuitive to use, Flux pumps are easy to operate, minimising the risk of operator injury. Helpful design features such as recessed drive couplings, protected controls and ergonomic handles help reduce the chance of accidental damage.

Axial or semi-axial impellers are available for high-flow or high-pressure applications. Our unique F 430 pump with over-size 50 mm impeller is perfect for high pressure IBC transfer. Powerful 800 W motors are ideal for pumping high density concentrated acids.

Applications for acid and alkali transfer

Flux poly drum pumps are used for the safe handling of dilute and concentrated acids and alkalis in almost every industry:

Manufacturers use Sulphuric Acid in the production of a wide range of chemicals, including household detergents and cleaners, dyes, pigments, fertiliser, and as a pickling agent to remove rust and impurities. Other uses include battery production, mineral processing, oil refining and wastewater treatment.

Hydrochloric Acid is used in the production of food products such a gelatine, corn syrup, carbonated drinks and sweets. Other uses include fireworks, bulbs, batteries and household cleaners. Also widely used for water treatment and to clean or de-oxidise metal surfaces.

Phosphoric Acid is predominantly used in the production of fertiliser, but also in the manufacturing of soap, wax, polish and detergent. Used as a food additive to prevent bacterial growth and in certain pharmaceutical products.

A common alkaline solution, widely used in the production of soaps and detergents. Also used for pH control in the water industry and in oil refining, agriculture and the production of pulp and paper.

Potassium Hydroxide (Potash) is used in the production of liquid soaps, potassium fertiliser, leather and textile products, de-greasers and dyes. Also used as an acidity regulator and thickening agent in the food industry.

Sodium Hypochlorite (Bleach) is widely used as a disinfectant and stain remover. Common uses include household cleaning products, paper beaching, swimming pool disinfection and water/wastewater treatment.

What is the best pump for handling hydrochloric acid?

When handling hydrochloric acid, you should choose a pump made from materials resistant to chemical degradation, e.g. PVC or polypropylene.

The Flux F 424 drum pump is an ideal choice. It features a reinforced polypropylene body with over-size PTFE bearings and corrosion-resistant Hastelloy C driveshaft, ensuring long-lasting reliability. Furthermore, the pump’s unique spiral driveshaft bearing reduces vibrations significantly. Plus, the driveshaft itself is reversible, doubling its service life. This pump is a seal-less design, meaning the pump does not contain any wetted o-rings. The design provides a degree of dry-running capability that mechanically sealed pumps cannot match. When mated to our F 458 totally-enclosed IP 55 motor with acid-resistant paint, you have the world’s best drum pump for acid transfer duty.

The Flux F 430 barrel pump has its own advantages. Its unique steel-cored inner tube, over-moulded with polypropylene, means this is the world’s strongest plastic drum pump. A range of o-ring materials provides compatibility with many aggressive chemicals, such as hydrochloric acid.  This pump uses a carbon-ceramic mechanical seal, allowing it to handle crystallising acids without risk of bearing damage.

Is there a light-weight pump for transferring acids or alkalis from 25 litre containers?

Our Junior and CombiFlux pumps are an excellent choice for transferring smaller volumes from narrow-necked containers, offering reliable performance from a light, portable design. Available in polypropylene, PVDF and stainless steel materials, they ensure safe and efficient handling of a range of acids and alkalis. These durable pumps are available in diameters from 25 to 32 mm and lengths of 500, 700, 1000 and 1200 mm, so they can even be used in larger drums and IBC containers. They are compact and easy to operate, so are ideal for situations where smaller volumes need to be transferred quickly and accurately. Furthermore, their serviceability, competitive pricing and range of motors (including cordless battery motor), make them a flexible, economical solution for businesses that need simple pump for light-duty acid and alkali transfer.

How do I choose the right material for a drum pump for acid transfer?

Choosing the right material for an acid transfer drum pump is critical to ensure operator safety and pump lifespan. We can help you select the most appropriate materials by consulting material resistance charts – these indicate compatibility with most common chemicals. Factors such as the type of acid, concentration, temperature, density and flammability all influence the material selection.

For acid transfer duty, polypropylene or PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) pumps are used because of their excellent chemical resistance. Additionally, pumps also are fitted with a choice of o-ring and gasket materials, e.g. FKM, EPDM, FFKM, to suit your application. Accessories such as hoses and dispense nozzles are also available in a range of materials, ensuring that all wetted components will be suitable. Considering material resistance carefully is the best way to guarantee the lifespan of your equipment.
