Drum Pumps for Chemicals: Safe and Efficient Solutions

Handling chemicals safely requires precision engineered pumps. A Flux drum pump for chemicals is an essential tool designed to ensure safe, reliable chemical transfer while minimising the risk of spills. Our drum pump for chemicals also helps maintain product integrity, reducing the risk of contamination. In addition, quality drum and IBC pumps minimise the risk of exposing operators to hazardous products. Whether handling corrosive acids, flammable solvents, or hazardous alkalis, having the right drum pump simplifies operations and ensures compliance with safety standards.

Features of a Flux drum pump for chemicals

Flux drum pumps are engineered to meet the rigorous demands of global chemical manufacturers and processors. By combining robust construction with user-friendly features, these pumps deliver reliable performance even in the most challenging environments. Here are the reasons why Flux is the preferred choice for chemical transfer:

Firstly, select from a range of quality materials such as stainless steel 316, polypropylene, PVDF and ETFE, with a choice of o-ring materials. Be assured that Flux pumps are specifically designed for pumping chemicals.

Flux pumps offer portability and simple operation, featuring ergonomic handles, easy-to-operate controls and safety features that protect the operator. Additionally, choose from light-duty JuniorFlux pumps through to our heavy-duty 400 series models. For further details, find more information here.

Many industries use these highly flammable chemicals for cleaning, thinning, and dissolving substances. Moreover, their versatility makes them essential in many applications:

  • Acetone: Commonly used for cleaning, degreasing and paint thinners.
  • Ethanol: Widely used in beverage, pharmaceutical and cosmetics production and food processing.
  • Toluene: Used in paint, adhesives and coatings manufacturing.
  • Methanol: Used as antifreeze, antiseptic, fuel additive and in production of biodiesel and synthetic resins.
  • Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA or Rubbing Alcohol): Commonly used as a disinfectant, cleaner and de-greaser.

Flux F 430 and F 424 ATEX-approved barrel and IBC pumps incorporate numerous safety features, including conductive materials, zone separation, earth bonding points and carbon-filled bearings, thereby minimising risk of static electricity discharge. In addition, using vapour control glands during the transfer process minimises hazardous vapor emissions.

Drum pumps are used to safely transfer common cleaning chemicals, which are essential for maintaining workplace hygiene:

  • Sodium Hypochlorite: Used as a disinfectant, bleach and sanitiser in water and wastewater treatment.
  • Sodium Sulphate: Important in production of detergents, textiles, glass and laundry detergents.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide: An effective household cleaner, used in laundry detergents antiseptics and disinfectants.
  • Peracetic Acid: Multiple uses including sanitization, sterilization and disinfection in laboratory, food, beverage and medical applications.

Flux pumps can safely and precisely transfer these liquids. Furthermore, they are ideal for industrial cleaning operations, e.g. medical facilities, laboratories and kitchens that require regular replenishment of cleaning agents.

Flux pumps are ideal for pumping these petroleum products:

  • Petrol, Kerosene and fuel additives: Many automotive, aviation, marine and power generation applications
  • Diesel and bio-diesel: Widely used in automotive, rail, HVAC, marine, agriculture and construction machinery.
  • Hydraulic Oils: Used in construction equipment, automotive systems and industrial machinery.
  • Mineral Oils: Used in engine lubrication and in the production of lubricants and greases
  • Grease: Lubricating machinery and moving parts in a wide range of applications.

ATEX rated Flux pumps are available for transferring flammable fuels such as petrol, methanol and kerosene. Aluminium pumps are suitable for pumping oil and diesel, ensuring quick and efficient transfer with minimal risk of contamination or spills. Additionally, high viscosity Viscopower pumps can transfer cold gear oil and grease.

Flux pumps can safely transfer a huge range of other hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals, such as:

What is the maximum chemical temperature a drum pump can handle?

Flux drum pumps are engineered to handle chemical temperatures up to 120°C, depending on the specific model and materials of construction.

For high temperature applications, verify the pump specifications, check material resistance charts or consult our experts to ensure compatibility.

Can a chemical barrel pump dispense high-viscosity silicone paste into 25 kg buckets?

The VISCOPOWER progressive cavity pump is a portable, efficient solution for transferring high-viscosity silicone paste from drums and barrels. Designed for products up to 80,000 mPas, the pump delivers smooth, pulsation-free flow. The pump inlet is immersed in the fluid.  A mixer in the tank keeping the paste moving and the pump creates a vacuum, helping to draw product into the inlet. A three-phase motor with speed adjustment allows the pump to handle silicone pastes of varying viscosities, making it adaptable to different application needs. The discharge hose is fitted with a non-return valve to prevent drips and spills.

Which portable pump can I use to dispense chemicals from small containers?

When dispensing chemicals, for example disinfectants in a laboratory setting, a battery-operated drum pump is an ideal choice. Firstly, it is lightweight and compact, providing enhanced mobility and ease of use. As a power cable is not required, this pump is a safe option for use in high traffic areas.

With interchangeable pump tubes available in different lengths and materials, our CombiFlux battery pump is ideal for transferring chemicals, acids and alkalis, cleaning and disinfection agents and light oils. Chemical-resistant materials ensuring safety and longevity. The ergonomic design is perfect for environments where heavier electric or air powered pumps may be impractical.

How can a chemical barrel pump help meter precise quantities of Sodium Hydroxide?

To meet customer requirements for accuracy and efficiency, the F 430 PP chemical barrel pump is paired with an F458 high-power motor, FMC 100 flow meter, FSV 100 amplifier, FLUXTRONIC® batch controller, plus additional components. This semi-automatic filling system provides precise metering accuracy of +/- 1%, a flow rate of 30 l/min and a delivery pressure of 1 bar.

The pump is switched off automatically once the set quantity is reached and a float switch ensures the live IBC is refilled when needed. For a tailored solution, contact us to configure your ideal filling system.

Application example - metering Methyl Methacrylate

The problem

The customer faced problems in accurately transferring highly flammable MMA from IBC’s into their mixing vessel. They wanted to ensure that the correct volume was transferred into their process at all times. Additional requirements were: reduction in waste and risk of spills, improved safety and increased transfer speed.

The solution

Flux was tasked with designing a portable ATEX (Ex) approved pump solution, which would be safe to use in the Zoned area where flammable vapours are present. As MMA is a low density, low viscosity fluid, we selected a trolley mounted F 430 series pump in stainless steel 316. The pump chosen had Kalrez and PTFE seals, offering maximum chemical resistance. The pump was fitted with an F 460 Ex drive motor, FMC flowmeter with Fluxtronic batch controller and Ex-rated FSV amplifier for switching duties. Conductive hoses and swaged hose connections, plus a custom designed filling lance, completed the package.

We assembled and tested the components in our workshop, then commissioned and calibrated the equipment on site and provided operator training. The customer is now able to couple the pump to the IBC, program the desired amount and hit “go”, safely transferring the correct volume to their process every time.
