ARO pumps - FAQs

ARO manufactures various types of pumps including high-pressure piston pumps, electric-motor driven, triple diaphragm pumps and also their well-regarded, air-operated double diaphragm pumps. Of these, ARO air-operated diaphragm pumps (AODD pumps) are the most ubiquitous products globally.

In fact, they can be found transferring fluids in every almost every industry. AODD pumps are positive displacement pumps that operate by using compressed air to drive a pair of diaphragms back and forth within two liquid chambers, thereby creating a pumping action. This mechanism provides reliable and efficient fluid movement, even when handling viscous, abrasive, or chemically sensitive liquids. Furthermore, ARO pumps are designed with durability in mind. Being compressed air powered makes them ideal for pumping flammable media, or use in environments where high concentrations of flammable vapours pose a hazard.

These pumps are often used in industries such as chemical processing, oil & gas production and food & beverage manufacturing, where reliable, safe and cost-effective fluid transfer is essential.

An air-operated diaphragm pump (AODD), like the ARO pump, is a self-priming, positive displacement design that can be run dry (for limited periods at least). Their small footprint, robust construction, high flow rates, plus useful self-stalling capability, mean they can be used in many different pumping scenarios. For example:

  1. Handling viscous liquids and sludge: Firstly, ARO pumps can effectively move viscous, liquids (up to 20,000 mPas), slurries and sludges that would clog or damage other pump types.
  2. Transfer of hazardous or corrosive fluids: Since ARO pumps are air-operated, they can be a safe choice in hazardous areas. They are available in many different materials, so choosing a model that is resistant to corrosion, or specific chemicals should be easy.
  3. Continuous, low maintenance operation: In addition, these pumps are highly durable, with few moving parts and no seals or bearings that can wear out. Therefore, this makes them ideal for continuous duty applications where minimal downtime is critical. Maintenance costs are also relatively low, making them a cost-effective choice.
  4. Self-priming: ARO AODD pumps have great dry priming ability, consequently making them suitable for a wide range of applications. The pump can be mounted above the liquid level, for example, on the surface above an underground tank. Assuming the inlet pipework is sized correctly, plus the liquid is not too viscous or adhesive in nature, these pumps will suck the liquid up to the pump inlet.
  5. Dry-running capability: ARO pumps can operate dry for short periods without damage, therefore making them a versatile option when priming is an issue, or where the liquid supply might run out unexpectedly. However, please note that running dry for long periods may effect diaphragm life.
  6. Adjustable flow control: Lastly, flow rate can be easily adjusted by controlling air pressure, making them adaptable and simple to use.

ARO pumps excel in situations where robust, reliable and flexible pumping solutions are needed for challenging fluid types or demanding environments.

  • Superior flow rates – 20-30% higher than competitors
  • FDA-approved materials for safe liquid handling
  • Quick maintenance with easy dismantling and servicing
  • Durable construction ensures long service life
  • High clearance flap valve models for extreme solids handling
  • High pressure models for challenging applications
