Air-operated double diaphragm (AODD) pumps are compressed air powered, positive displacement pumps. Here’s a brief overview of their operating mechanism:
Firstly, a shared shaft connects two flexible diaphragms that move forwards and backwards, pumping liquid in and out of two connected fluid chambers. The chambers share a common inlet and outlet. A bi-directional compressed air valve directs air to push one or other diaphragm, thereby pressurising one liquid chamber, while simultaneously creating a vacuum in the other.
Each pump chamber has an inlet and outlet check valve, typically ball or flap valves. As one chamber is pressurised to push the liquid out, the inlet check valve closes, while the discharge check valve opens and the liquid is discharged into the outlet manifold. Meanwhile the check valve in the opposite chamber opens under vacuum and the discharge valve is closed as fluid is drawn in from the inlet manifold.
The pumping cycle alternates up to 400 times per minute.
Diaphragm pumps are renowned for their durability and efficiency in tough industries such as construction, manufacturing and agriculture. Their popularity stems from their robustness and ability to perform reliably under tough conditions. Made from durable materials such as stainless steel, polypropylene or aluminium, these pumps are designed for heavy duty use and can last for many years if regularly serviced.
The lifespan of a diaphragm pump depends on several factors such as liquid characteristics, correct mounting, materials of construction and the duty cycle. However, regular maintenance is also vital to extend the life of your diaphragm pump. Therefore, it is essential to inspect and replace parts such as diaphragms and valve assemblies regularly, to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
Use within designated air pressures and adhere to manufacturer guidelines to prevent premature wear and tear. Additionally, avoiding dry running will improve diaphragm life. Leakage can only occur as a result of diaphragm failure.
Furthermore, selecting the right size and type of pump for your needs enhances durability and efficiency. For instance, running a small pump at very high speed will reduce diaphragm life compared to running a larger pump more slowly, while delivering the same flow rate. It can help to consult industry professionals, such as Flux, so we can assist in pump selection.
With proper care, diaphragm pumps can consequently operate reliably for years, making them a valuable investment for demanding fluid management tasks. Plus, using genuine spare parts will help maintain your equipment in top condition.
ARO PRO Series pumps are cost-efficient, reliable and well proven transfer pumps with simple construction and a limited number of features and options. In contrast, EXP Series pumps are aimed at process operators and more challenging applications. They cover a wider operating range and incorporate unique design features such as long-life diaphragms and precision air valves to prevent stalling. Such features improve service life and reduce long-term ownership costs, elevating them above the competition. An optional electronic interface outputs signals to PLC’s, PC’s or ARO’s own process control device, thereby providing automation for batch dispensing operations.
