Low-Pressure vs High-Pressure Pumps
What is the difference between a low-pressure and high-pressure pump?
Low-pressure pumps
Ideal for plant watering and transferring water over short distances
Suitable for filling tanks, watering cans, water butts, or basic watering tasks.
Delivery pressure is similar to a typical household tap.
High-pressure pumps
Designed for sprinklers, irrigation, filter and spray systems.
Suitable for long hose runs.
Provide two to three times the pressure of a standard tap.
Typically powered by mains electricity.
Can I use a pump with a sprinkler?
Yes. However, for powerful results, you will require a high-pressure pump.
Einhell offers two high pressure, clear water pumps:
This electric pump (model code 4180280) is “dry” pump, ie. the pump itself is not submerged in the water. It requires hoses for both inlet (suction side) and outlet (discharge side), and additionally delivers discharge pressure up to 36 m water column (3.5 Bar – approx. 3.5 x tap water pressure).
This battery powered submersible pump (model code 4170429) provides discharge pressure up to 20 m water column (2 Bar – approx. 2 x tap water pressure) This pump can be used with or without the telescopic rain barrel extension pipe.
Do I need electricity for a high-pressure pump?
It depends. Before selecting a pump, consider whether a power source is available close to the water source (within 5 m). Also consider how much discharge pressure is needed. The garden “surface” pump (model 4180280) requires a standard 240V mains power supply. Furthermore, it delivers very high pressure, at 3.6 Bar max.
If no electricity supply is available, consider the Einhell rain barrel pump (model 4170429). This pump can be used as a standard submersible pump (without the extension pipe attached) and can also deliver max pressure of 2 Bar. You will need a hose connection (available separately) to connect the pump outlet directly to a hose. Hose connections for 13 mm garden hose, or larger 19 mm hose, are available from Flux.
What is a clear-water pump?
Clear water is simply water that looks clear. It can have some small particles in it.
Examples of clear water include puddles, basement flooding, paddling / swimming pool water, rainwater in barrels and tanks, other clear water sources without solid particles.
Furthermore, clear water pumps are used for irrigation, garden watering, car washing etc.
They are designed primarily for occasional use with garden hose, or potentially larger 19 mm hose, which will therefore increase flow rate.
What is a dirty water pump?
Dirty water looks muddy, silty and brown. Waste water (sometimes called grey water) may also be considered dirty water.
Examples of dirty water include drainage water, pond water, storm water and groundwater flowing into excavations.
In addition, dirty water contains high levels of suspended solids (silt, microscopic dirt particles) and perhaps larger entrained solids (sand, grit, stones).
Furthermore, dirty water pumps typically have a close-coupled, automatic float switch. As water levels rise, eg. in an excavation or sump, the switch activates the pump. When water is pumped away, the switch automatically turns the pump off to avoid dry running. Moreover, dirty water pumps can be left in situ for long periods, keeping water levels low without the need for supervision.
Einhell offers a range of dirty water pumps covering flow rates from 7,000 – 18,000 litres per hour.
Hose Size & Compatibility
What hose is required for a dirty water pump?
Dirty water pumps are designed so that particulates can pass through the pump without causing any damage.
Even smaller Einhell dirty water pumps handle particles up to 25 mm in diameter.
Therefore, dirty water pumps require large bore hoses, typically 25 -32 mm diameter, as garden hoses could block.
Finally, the larger the hose, the quicker the water will be pumped away.
Does Einhell make a high pressure dirty-water pump?
No, Einhell dirty water pumps are high flow, low pressure pumps, designed to shift large volumes of water as quickly as possible.
If your house is flooding, these pumps consequently remove water quickly and efficiently.
Although they can pump clear water, they can be used for simple transfer duties only.
They develop typical max discharge pressure of 0.8 Bar (8 metres water column).
Therefore, they are not ideal for use with sprinklers, filtration and irrigation systems.
What information do I need before choosing a clear-water pump?
To recommend the most suitable pump, we typically ask:
Is there a 240V mains power supply within 5 m of the water source?
What is the water source – water butt, pool, tank, rain barrel, other?
What is the distance from the water source to the furthest area to be watered?
Will you be using a sprinkler/sprayer or simply an open-ended hose?
What is the most economical solution?
This depends if a clean or dirty water pump is required and whether a mains 240 V power supply is available.
Understand the application first to narrow down the selection, then choose between the three most suitable pumps, depending on the flow rate and discharge pressure needed.

Choosing a Pump for Low-Level Water Extraction
Which Einhell pumps can be used to draw water from a low-level?
We recommend two options:
1. Electric Garden Pump – 4180280
A mains-powered surface pump designed to suction lift water over high vertical distance
2. Battery Submersible Pump – 4170429
A cordless pump that operates submerged in the water and is suitable where mains power is unavailable.
How do I choose between the two Einhell pumps?
The selection depends on:
Whether a 240V power supply is available.
How far below ground the water level is.
What is the maximum suction lift of the electric garden pump (4180280)?
The Garden Pump 4180280 can suction lift water from a maximum depth of 8 metres (approximately 26 feet).
Pros
No battery charging required.
Higher continuous performance for extended duty cycles.
Cost-effective if mains power is available.

Requires separate inlet (suction) and outlet (discharge) hoses.
Integrated priming tank requires manual filling before use.
Cannot draw water from depths greater than 8 metres.
What if my water level is deeper than 8 metres?
If the water level is below 8 metres, the Einhell surface pump will not be suitable.
How should the Battery Submersible Pump (4170429) be installed?
For low-level applications:
Use without telescopic connection tube
Fit hose connection and suitable length discharge hose
Consider using larger 19 mm bore discharge hose rather than a standard garden hose, to maximise flow rate.
Ask an electrician to extend the supplied power cable, as the standard 5 m cable (from battery box to pump) may not be long enough to reach the water level.
