Metering Methyl Methacrylate
PROBLEM
The customer faced problems in accurately transferring highly flammable MMA from IBC’s into their mixing vessel. They wanted to ensure that the correct volume was transferred into their process at all times, reduce waste and spill risk, plus improve safety and increase transfer speed.
Solution
Flux was tasked with designing a portable ATEX (Ex) approved pump solution, which would be safe to use in the Zoned area where flammable vapours are present. As MMA is a low density, low viscosity fluid, we selected a trolley mounted F430 series pump in stainless steel 316, with Kalrez and PTFE seals, offering maximum chemical resistance. The pump was fitted with an F460 Ex drive motor, FMC flowmeter with Fluxtronic batch controller and Ex-rated FSV amplifier for switching duties. Conductive hoses and swaged hose connections, plus a custom designed filling lance, completed the package.
We assembled and tested the components in our workshop, then commissioned and calibrated the equipment on site and provided operator training. The customer is now able to couple the pump to the IBC, program the desired amount and hit “go”, safely transferring the correct liquid volume to their process every time.
